Traditionally, large period homes have high ceilings. These lofty heights designed to demonstrate wealth. The higher the ceilings, the more it would cost to heat the room. So the greater the ceiling heigh, the greater the wealth of the owners! Not all ceiling light lengths are created equal and as a result lighting high ceilings comes with challenges.

We recommend that you always have a minimum of 7 feet of clearance from the bottom of the light to the floor. This can be shorter if the light is placed over furniture so that the light won’t be walked into!
Medieval lighting for high ceilings
Medieval lights replicate historic designs. Originally, they would have utilised tallow (animal fat) candles. However, these replica lights can utilise modern LED bulbs for a similar look.
Wrought iron and rustic designs cleverly recreate the handmade effect that would have been prevalent in this era.
Tudor lighting for high ceilings
During Tudor times, the Tudor rose and other gothic motifs often embellished chandeliers for homes with high ceilings. Church windows inspired hall lanterns featuring coloured glass panels.
To recreate this look, chose fittings in darker colours for example antique bronze and avoid shiny metals and hanging crystals.
Elizabethan lighting for high ceilings
Similarly to the Tutor style, dark metal lights and circular chandeliers were used to light rooms with high ceilings.
In addition, metal wall sconces and metal table lamps would have provided subsidiary light during this period. Wrought iron, bronze, brass and pewter are still used today to reproduce Elizabethan style lighting. As well as pottery which was introduced during this era.
Jacobean lighting for high ceilings
Lighting in the Jacobean era was not dissimilar to the periods preceding it. The subtle difference being how the rustic metal chandeliers were decorated. For instance, Jacobean lights would have included stems with intertwining leaves, elaborate scrollwork and mythological beast in wrought iron fittings.
Candles were still one of the only ways to light a room during this era. Teaming dark metal fittings with candle light bulbs is the perfect way to revive this look. While pairing ceiling lights with matching wall lights will help to provide additional mood lighting in a large room.
Georgian lighting for high ceilings
Lighting in the Georgian period started to move away from the rustic style of the earlier eras. Fittings created in highly polished brass or silver created a more sophisticated look. In contrast Rococo style lighting is more elegant and graceful with intimate hand decorated arms dripping with glass cut droplets. Perfect hung over a bed to add a touch of modest, romantic charm to larger bedrooms.


Regency lighting for high ceilings
Regency lights, similarly to the Rococo style focused more on understated splendour rather than fussy embellishments. Formal chandeliers made with polished or burnished brass and lit with multiple candles furnished large rooms. A large amount of candles and a well lit house was a sign of wealth.

Shaker style lighting is especially perfect for kitchens with high ceilings or open plan minimalist homes.
