Unique Lighting for Sloping and Vaulted Ceilings.

Bespoke Lights have introduced a great new range of hanging pendant lights that can be fitted onto slanted or sloping ceilings. They use specially adapted ceiling roses which fit onto the sloping ceiling allowing the drop rods to hang straight down. Whilst sloping ceilings are stunning, until now they have been a challenge to light. As we added this innovative range of lights to our website, it got us thinking that it would useful to have some expert hints and tips for anyone struggling with lighting slanted or vaulted ceilings.

The majority of ceiling lights are designed to hang from flat ceilings and if you have angled or vaulted ceilings you may be struggling to find the correct lighting solutions.  When you look up at your high angled ceiling it may seem that your options are limited but you have a lot more choices that you may think! Embrace your sloping or pitched ceilings and take full advantage of the opportunity to highlight this fantastic architectural feature.

Vaulted rooms? Select the perfect light for a pitched ceiling!

Choosing one type of lighting, whatever the size of your space, is not enough. As with most rooms its best to have a layered approach. High vaulted or angled ceilings need several layers of light to adequately light all the extra space and to ensure you are not left with an oppressive shadowy area above.  A combination of recessed downlights, track lights, hanging pendant lights or chandeliers can provide general or ambient lighting whilst table and floor lamps can be added for task lighting and accent lighting. Having a skylight on the slope of your ceiling is a good way of taking advantage of the free natural light which will reduce your costs and impact on the environment during the day.

Hanging Pendant Lights and Chandeliers

Ceiling Light for conservatory, orangery and garden rooms. Suitable for flat, vaulted or sloped ceilings.

Pendant lights and chandeliers are ideal for hanging from a central beam that has a flat area where you can fix the ceiling rose to allow the fittings to hang straight down. Some vaulted ceilings meet in the middle leaving no room for a light to hang straight down and if this is the case you will need to consider a specially adapted pendant for using on angled ceilings.

Here are a few of our favourites.

The Pullman retro style ceiling pendant certainly rekindles the excitement and drama of stage lighting with a dash of nautical flair thrown in for good measure. The unique angled ceiling rose can be fitted onto both sloping and flat ceilings allowing the rod suspension to hang straight down. Impressive pendant lights available in a choice of finishes.

This delightful Lyndon chandelier has bags of character with its architectural bronze finish and seeded glass shades. It can be used both indoors and outside too and is suitable for flat and sloping ceilings.

Our final offering is from our Provence lighting range. This collection takes its inspiration from French lighting designs dating from the mid 1900’s and will suit both traditional and more modern settings. A versatile fitting with a variety of applications around the home – it can be used as a wall light or ceiling pendant and by using the 3 flexible knuckle joints the lights can be angled into a whole host of positions to deliver light exactly where you need it.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lights are a common solution for lighting sloping ceilings and come in a host of styles and finishes. Special downlights for sloping ceilings with angled fittings that will allow the light to shine down rather that at an angle are a great choice. There are two basic downlights available – fixed or adjustable. The fixed downlights have a fixed centre whereas the adjustable ones have a centre that can be swivelled allowing you to direct the angle of the beam of light to highlight a particular area or feature.

Track Lighting

Track lights are another popular and versatile way to light sloping ceilings. You can install a mix of spotlights and hanging pendant lights onto the tracks which will give you greater control over the height, spread and direction of each light. The tracks are fitted onto the sloping ceiling and the lights are adapted to hang straight down.

Wall Lights and Wall Sconces

Wall lights are a great way to bridge the gap between the ceiling lights and your lower level lighting. Light fittings that direct the light both up and down the walls are really useful as they will accentuate the height and give a better spread of light. Wall lights can be fitted anywhere from eye-level upwards.  If you have really high ceilings you can create an attractive and balanced effect by placing wall lights in the middle third section of the height of your wall

The Hyde wall lights shown above are double wall lights with bulbs both top and bottom creating a bold yet warm lighting effect. Made in the UK by David Hunt Lighting they offer a contemporary silhouette with more than a hint of 1950’s and 1960’s styling. The hand spun, cone shaped, metal shades are lined in gold and the fittings have solid brass metalwork. The Hyde lighting range includes other wall lights, table lamps and ceiling lights (some suitable for sloping ceilings) to allow you to coordinate your lighting.

Table Lamps and Floor Standing Lamps

Table lamps and standard lamps are great for adding a little extra mood lighting at base level. Uplighter table and floor lamps are a good choice and there are a whole range of styles to choose from. Simply click on the images for more details about the Bernwood Tiffany floor lamp and the Jefferson cloche table lamp shown here.

Light and Airy

When decorating areas with high or vaulted ceilings, choose colours from the neutral colour palette as this will enhance the space and not be too harsh. Let your sloping ceiling speak for itself and simply highlight the interesting angular features and slopes with clever lighting choices.
