Designers and architects know that lighting is a vital element in creating a real impact and this is no less true in designing for the hotel and leisure industry. As well as aesthetic considerations there will also be issues of cost, efficiency and health and safety.
Our aim at Bespoke Lights is to provide a range of styles to suit whatever ambience you wish to create, whilst still meeting your commercial requirements. Although various areas of a hotel have difference functional needs, we can offer appropriate products that will give you or your clients a unique but cohesive brand identity. We supply products for all sizes of operation but here we are looking at lighting for boutique hotels, small privately owned hotels and guest houses and offer our suggestions for suitable lights for the different areas.
Just as each area of your hotel will have different functions, so the lighting needs will vary. Lighting schemes for guest bedrooms, reception, front of house, restaurants, bars, shops and coffee shops will all need to be tailored to the specific requirements of that area. All will need functional lights to provide the basic illumination but there is a fantastic opportunity for decorative lighting of walls, ceilings and any special features to create the atmosphere that is such a crucial element in the hospitality sector.
We are concentrating here on the decorative aspect of lighting but rest assured that all our lights meet all relevant British Standard regulations. One legal requirement that is worth mentioning however is the need for emergency lighting which is activated when there is a failure in the mains power supply, giving guests the light to safely evacuate the building. Functional emergency lights are freely available but are frankly not the prettiest of lights and can strike a discordant note in an otherwise attractive design. If you agree, and have struggled to find that elusive thing, decorative emergency lighting, contact our Contract Lighting Team here at Bespoke Lights and we will work with you to provide you with what you need sales@bespokelights.co.uk
Privately run hotels do not have to conform to any corporate image and can, and should, be unique and creative with their interior décor. This individual approach has given rise to the ‘Boutique Hotel Revolution’. This braver and bolder style throws off the traditional hotel style, giving guests a chance to experience design statements they’d never try at home. Guests are willing to pay a little more for the pleasure. Large hotels and chains are now also looking for this individuality and heightened experience but boutique and privately owned hotels can change their decor quickly, adapting to the latest trends. Bespoke Lights will do all we can to help!
Here are some thoughts for lighting different areas of boutique and privately owned hotels. We hope that this is helpful but if there is anything we haven’t covered, or you want to discuss your specific needs, just give us a call. Whatever your lighting requirement, we’ll work with you to find the best solution. Put in some contact details?
- FOYER LIGHTING – The instant wow! Lighting in the foyer of a hotel should be spectacular; it must tell guests they’ve made the right choice. We all know there is only one chance to make a good first impression!
- CORRIDOR LIGHTING – As guests are on route to their rooms they are formulating an opinion about your hotel. Lighting in passageways and corridors is important and should make guests feel secure, but should also be attractive. Also, don’t forget the emergency lighting. This can be functional non maintained lighting, but there are also decorative emergency lights or maintained emergency lights for hotels that want all of their lights to be beautiful. More about emergency lighting can be found >>> here.
-
- GUEST BEDROOMS – Bedrooms are where guests most need to feel relaxed and the lighting you choose can play a large part in achieving this. Lighting needs to be versatile and offer guests different light levels. Bedside lamps, a floor lamp and desk lamps are the basics. Recessed lighting and surface mounted ceiling lights seem to be the magic formula in most hotels, but raise the bar a little and offer the unexpected and your hotel is immediately upgraded in guests minds to a ‘posh hotel’. Of course, as well as being decorative bedroom lamps should be low maintenance, economical, easy to clean and robust yet still with a stylish understated quality.
- EN SUITE – A dark and dingy en-suite bathroom is depressing and can look grubby so don’t stint on the lights here. As well as functional general bathroom lighting, make sure that the mirror is well lit. All our bathroom light fittings show the areas of the bathroom they are suitable for in accordance with the relevant regulations.
-
- HOTEL RESTAURANT – Make it unique! If possible, give dedicated lighting to each table. Be bold, add lots of low level lighting; plenty of fittings with low wattage bulbs is better than one huge light in this situation. If the restaurant is also used for breakfast ensure that it is lit differently in the day, keeping the night time that bit more special.
-
- BAR LIGHTS. The bar should have light above and behind. The bar needs to well-lit for two reasons; you want customers to feel confident to approach the bar and your staff need to be able to see clearly. If there’s a menu board – light it! Not everyone has 20/20 vision and you want guests to be tempted by the treats on offer – big clear words and well lit menu boards can really help the specials fly out. Cosy corners and booth lights need to be varied in style so customers can see a different vista each time they visit. It may even temp them back to sit in a different seat or arrive early for their favorite seats.
- WC’s – Don’t forget the toilets. Hotel facilities can be lifted dramatically by the smallest amount of luxury. A small chandelier in the ladies, pendants in the gents,

good mirror lights and tadah! That’s it. Luxury loo’s to remember.
-
- CONFERENCE /FUNCTION ROOMS – Often in smaller hotels these spaces are multi-functional, used as a venue for such things as meetings and weddings! This is one extreme to the other and your lighting must be flexible enough to deal with a range of uses. Go for good, general, functional lighting on one lighting circuit and on another have wall lights and on another again have a wow feature light. Chandeliers are great for weddings as they are still the most romantic of lights, even better if teamed with some fairy lights – yes this really works!
