DON’T OVERLOOK THE LIGHTING!
Lighting is often overlooked when people are considering the interior design of their homes. This is a great pity as with a little careful thought and planning lighting can make a real impact. A well planned lighting scheme will enhance your home, provide warmth and atmosphere and identify the different areas within your home.
There are essentially three main types of lighting that should be considered and depending on the room you are decorating you may need elements of all three.
Ambient Lighting – think of this as your general or background light. These are the lights that enhance or take over from natural daylight when required. Central ceiling lights and wall lights are the obvious examples. Central ceiling light fittings, on their own, can create a bland effect so it is a good idea to add some supplementary lighting to add texture and personality.

Task Lighting – this is all about focusing on the job in hand. Desk lamps that provide light in one particular spot or floor lamps used for reading are prime examples. Use lamps that can be moved or adjusted to angle the direction and spread of light to give you more flexibility. Spotlights are another good example as they can be used to highlight particular areas. They are ideal for providing a good direct light in the kitchen for food preparation. Pendant lights over kitchen islands and dining tables also provide directional light as well as being a great focal point in the room and an opportunity for you to add your own stamp to your lighting scheme. And not forgetting picture lights that will highlight your paintings and artwork.

Accent Lighting – this is an opportunity to add the finishing touches to your lighting by adding some mood or accent lighting or maybe a bit of drama. Table lamps and standard lamps provide pools of lights and added interest in a room by creating real warmth and depth to a lighting scheme.
