The nights are drawing in and the shortest day will soon be upon us, so now is the perfect time to warm up our interiors for the cold winter months ahead. Being that bit further north, Scotland has more than its fair share of dark nights and even shorter hours of daylight than we do in the relatively balmy south west of England where we are based. Scotland will be celebrating St Andrews Day on 30th November so what better reason to look north of the border for our pick of some of the best Scottish themed lighting.
Scotland is known throughout the world for its unique blend of stunning scenery, rich history and traditional hospitality. But no mention of Scotland would be complete without mentioning tartan which is a ‘must have’ element in any Highland inspired interior. Simply introducing a warm tartan throw or a few tartan cushions will instantly create a cosy feel in any sitting room or bedroom. These classic checked designs are mostly in autumnal rich reds and russets or darker blues and greens which are perfect for creating a cosy textured look for winter as you curl up by the fire with a wee dram of the golden nectar.
This charming room is warm, homely and inviting. The ceiling light and table lamp are from UK manufacturer David Hunt Lighting and I think you will agree they are the perfect choice for this Highland inspired setting.
Below we have added a couple of textured bronze table lamps to go with the cushions on the chair and with the bookcase to create a rich autumnal look. Both these delightful UK made lamps have exquisite detailing in cast bronze resin to give a lovely soft ambient lighting effect. The base of the Author table lamp features a collection of old classic books and is teamed with a truffle brown silk shade lined in metallic bronze. The utterly charming Hopper table lamp has a lifelike hare sat on a pile of books and is finished with a taupe silk shade also lined in bronze.
The Highlands of Scotland, with its many mountain ranges, is a vast area that covers almost a quarter of Britain’s land surface. This large area is home to one of the Highlands most famous inhabitants, the red deer. These magnificent creatures, particularly the stags with their branched antlers, are the largest native land animals in the UK.
Our David Hunt Lighting Collection features a wonderful range of Antler light fittings that are inspired by these noble beasts and the rugged Scottish landscape. Beautiful lights and accessories that will bring a little natural rustic beauty to your Highland themed retreat. Unsurprisingly these lights are very popular with our customers north of the border. If you are feeling a little uneasy about using real antlers in your home, then these lights are the definitely the next best thing. They are skillfully crafted from durable resin and hand painted in warm brown highland colours that makes them almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
One of our Antler table lamps is shown below along with a matching ceiling light. The quality of these British made lights shines through. They combine both stag antlers and tartan silk shades – what could be more Scottish than that?
A few more of our Antler ceiling lights. These are versatile lights that can be customised with different coloured shades and longer chain lengths should you need it. And If you cannot find exactly the right antler light why not let Bespoke Lights make one for you to your chosen specification?
This magnificent stag antler ceiling chandelier, shown above, is hand painted in rustic highland colours and is a realistic alternative to using real antlers. A large imposing ceiling light with 17 individual lights on a tiered pendant. This one is definitely for larger country homes or traditional hotels.
Wall lights are wonderful for adding some background light in receptions rooms and if you add a dimmer switch you can control the light level to create the right atmosphere.
Here a few of our Antler wall lights that can be mixed and matched with the other Antler fittings or simply used as stand-alone wall lights.
The left facing wall light, shown above, has a matching right facing version. Wonderful for either side of a fireplace or dresser. It is supplied complete with the natural weave linen shade illustrated.
Accessories are all important to complete the Highland look. These mirrors entwined with stag antlers add the perfect finishing touch. They are available in a rustic brown or distressed cream finish and have bevel-edged mirror glass – really effective over a fireplace or in a large hallway.
The stylised bronze stag head wall sculpture (shown left) has a fine pair of antlers and will make an imposing feature on a wall over a fireplace. Equally as impressive is the imposing stag antler wall sculpture (shown right). Perfect in a large entrance hallway or over a fireplace.
Go on, indulge yourself this season and add a little Highland style to your home. Gone are the cool cottons and linens from the summer months to be replaced by the warm autumnal textures designed to lift your spirits and keep you snug over winter. Unless you are fortunate enough to have a baronial castle, try to keep things fairly simple and just add a few well chosen pieces – you will be amazed what a difference it makes! All of the beautiful Scottish themed lights and accessories shown in this blog are available to order on our Bespoke Lights website.
