A CRYSTAL CHANDELIER IN MY BATHROOM?
When you think of a crystal chandelier you probably have in mind a grand dining room or hallway in a large house decorated with a glamorous light fitting dripping with expensive crystals. What you probably won’t be thinking of is having a chandelier in your bathroom. Until quite recently most bathrooms were lit by simple flush fitting ceiling lights. Whilst these are undoubtedly a practical option they add little in the way of style. Fortunately, today we can choose bathroom lights that are both elegant and stylish as well as being safe for using in the bathroom environment. The Marquis by Waterford collection is a glamorous selection of quality crystal bathroom lights at surprisingly affordable prices. They will elevate bathroom lighting to previously unimaginable levels.
WHY IS WATERFORD CRYSTAL SO SPECIAL?
Waterford Crystal can trace its origins back to 1783 when the first glass blowing factories were established on land adjacent to Merchants Quay in the heart of the Irish harbour town of Waterford. Founded by bothers William and George Penrose, the company quickly gained a reputation and became known the world over for the clarity and purity of colour of their crystal. The original aim was to ‘create the finest crystal for drinking vessels and objects of beauty for the home.’ They enjoyed early success and even supplied pieces for the Royal Household of Queen Victoria to celebrate her Golden Jubilee.
If you are lucky enough to visit the House of Waterford Crystal in Ireland you will be greeted by this magnificent William Maddock clock. It took one artisan glass maker six months to complete, encasing the clock in 48 crystal panels and 250 decorative buttons, each exquisitely hand crafted. You can just see the bottom of a seahorse sat on the top of the clock – the seahorse is the logo of Waterford Crystal.
Today, the traditional patterns made famous by the earlier glass makers form the basis for new product ranges. The Lismore pattern created by Chief Designer, Miroslav Havel remains the world’s best-selling crystal pattern. Although Waterford crystal is no longer made in Ireland, Marquis by Waterford are still dedicated to upholding the same core values that inspired their predecessors. Products are now made using K9 crystal, a modern high quality alternative offering great clarity and excellent reflective properties. This crystal is an excellent choice for the manufacture of high end chandeliers.

Most of us start and end each day in the bathroom and often spend a considerable time there. The average British male spends 855 days in the bathroom during his lifetime whilst women manage to cut this down to 770 days! When you take this into account it pays spend a little time getting it right as nothing is more depressing than a badly lit bathroom. Many of you may well be planning a bathroom renovation in the New Year and we would encourage you to not to overlook or skimp on lighting. Consider what functions you and the family will be being carrying out and factor in the necessary ambient and task lighting. Most bathrooms are designed to last between 10 and 15 years so planning properly will be time well spent.
We all know that water and electricity do not mix and for this reason it is important to ensure any light fittings installed in a bathroom comply with the current regulations. We would urge you to read our earlier blog on bathroom lighting regulations before choosing your light fittings – just click on the picture above.
