PERIOD LIGHTING FOR VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN HOMES

This is the second in our series of blogs focusing on our individual lighting collections. Here we are showcasing our Period Lighting Collection which features reproduction lighting based on designs from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Electric lighting was still in its infancycbl victoria

when Queen Victoria died in 1901and throughout the Victorian era electricity remained very expensive. Gas lighting was common in our towns and cities and was supplemented by candles and oil lamps, whilst in smaller towns and villages lighting was almost exclusively by candles and oil lamps. It was not until the Edwardian period that we began to see wider availability of electricity and a gradual replacement of the gasoliers (gas light fittings) with new electric lights.

Many of us today still live in homes built during these times and it is always a dilemma when it comes to installing lighting – just how far do you wander from the traditional period look? However much we may want to remain in keeping with the age of the property, there will not be many of us who want to go back to using candles, oil lamps and gasoliers with their associated fumes, bad smells and sooty deposits when we now have clean, safe lighting at the flick of a switch. If you are looking for light fittings that are sympathetic to the age of your property and have all the modern benefits of electric lighting then look no further than our British made Period Lighting Collection.

All the fittings in our Period Lighting Collection are carefully hand crafted to replicate lights from the early days of electric lighting in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Many reproduction lights are made from electro-plated steel, alloy or resin but the lights in this collection are all made in solid brass with a genuine tarnish that is then hand waxed and buffed to create lights that are virtually indistinguishable from restored antiques. Simply handle one of the lights from our Period Lighting Collection  and you will feel and see the difference – classic British lighting at its very best! Superb quality lighting that can be enjoyed and treasured for many years to come and with the added bonus that it’s more affordable than you might think.

The lights are sold with traditional glass shades included which we have chosen to compliment the fittings in both style and proportion.

The majority of these shades are, however, interchangeable allowing you to mix and match the fittings with the shades of your choice for a more bespoke option. These are not mass produced lights – they are individually made to order and whilst delivery may take a little longer we feel sure you will agree that they are worth waiting for. As these are custom made lights we can adapt the fittings to suit your requirements – if for instance you need a longer rod or chain suspension this can easily be arranged. We also offer a full bespoke and contract lighting service where lights can be made or adapted to cater for individual needs.

The Collection includes a range of table lamps, desk lights, floor lamps, wall lights, ceiling lights and chandeliers.

A trio of three traditional table lamps all in different designs are shown above. The desk lamp on the left is height adjustable and the green glass shade, with its white inner to direct the light, can be angled to fix the light exactly where it is needed.  Can’t you just see this sat on a leather top desk in a gentleman’s study! The elegant table lamp in the centre with its white mushroom glass shade is in the classic Art Nouveau style. The Art Nouveau style was popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Tiffany lighting also dates from the same period and the table lamp on the right is a classic example. The shade features the iconic dragonfly design which has become so synonymous with Tiffany lighting.

Our final selection showcases some of the wonderful ceiling lights from our Period Lighting Collection.

The Albert 5 light chandelier shown cbl albert chandelierabove has superb detailing and is teamed here with ribbed halophane glass shades. Halophane glass has a luminous appearance and will give optimal illumination with little or no glare.

The Drake pendant shown below is a long kitchen style pendant that has two separate lights on decorative arms that hang either side of
